Citrine is a yellow-to-golden member of the quartz mineral group. As a form of quartz with ferric iron impurities, it is not common in nature. Amethyst is a purple quartz of the same family. There is a colorless quartz referred to as “rock crystal”. Quartz specimens from different areas have been discovered in a variety of colors. Amethyst and Citrine have been discovered in the same stone allowing the beautiful effect of yellow blending into purple within a single jewel!

Citrines whose colors have been produced by heat treatment have much more of an orange or reddish tone than those found in nature. Mined citrines are usually a pale yellow. Brazil is the leading producer of naturally mined citrine. Much of its production comes from the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Madeira, Spain also produces deep golden citrines, which can resemble the Imperial Topaz.
